A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
