The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An freshly coined term came to light several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to treat a child who has lost their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are still being committed. Officials rejects these claims, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that initially championed peace has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
