Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The gang of attackers breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, according to a statement.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to seek ransom payments or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Safety emergency in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the unrest.
