No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
