The nation’s food safety authority has announced it intends to start a total removal of numerous ostriches at a ranch following the highest judicial body refused to block the disputed cull.

Judicial Obstacles Removed by Supreme Court Decision

The recent judicial decision eliminated all judicial obstacle to starting the slaughter.

The ostrich farm, situated near the town of Edgewood, British Columbia, was initially directed in the month of May to eradicate close to 400 ostriches, due to fears of an outbreak of H5N1 avian flu.

Earlier this week, officials seized control of the operation.

Nearly seventy birds have already died after the emergence of a influenza-like sickness.

Midweek, Canada’s supreme court issued an interim stay on the eradication directive as it considered whether to take up the matter.

The increasing controversy over the birds – and a lingering distrust of government – have inspired demonstrators to descend on the property, with many broadcasting their frustration on online platforms.

The case has also entered the nation’s political sphere.

In early October, the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, was questioned twice by reporters whether he supported protesters.

The Conservative figure has steered clear of making specific comments on the issue, even though many within his political group voicing opposition against the cull.

He informed the press the issue had been poorly handled from the start but didn’t say the word “ostrich”.

International Involvement and Offers

Several prominent figures from the US have petitioned authorities in Canada.

The US health secretary proposed to relocate the ostriches to his ranch in the Sunshine State.

An US wealthy businessman has also appealed with the authorities to reverse its eradication directive.

Scientific and Ethical Debates

The national authorities stated the relevant agency was adhering to a “stamping out” policy in order to contain the transmission of avian flu, a step consistent with broader advice from global health organizations.

However, animal rights organizations have called on the agency to conduct further testing on the animals to confirm they are infected.

The farm owners claimed that because the most recent fatality occurred on 15 January 2025, with the surviving majority appearing in good condition or recovered, the flock has acquired at least partial herd immunity against the virus.

They have also cast doubt on the extent and effectiveness of the tests on the ostriches.

Farm Representative Response

Recently, the ranch representative, informed the media that the authority was killing healthy birds.

“These are ancient creatures that have survived eons, but they won’t endure the government agency,” she said.

A partner expressed he was concerned there’s – in my opinion – there’s no fairness left”.

Judicial and Agency Findings

A federal court, on the other hand, determined that permitting the ostriches to stay alive could lead to the spread of bird flu to other animals, the livestock sector – or to people.

The authority has not announced at what time it plans to begin culling the birds.

Culling Methods

A 2016 guideline document, acquired under freedom of information laws, says ostriches can be euthanized by various methods, the recommended being injection, which needs multiple individuals: one person to restrain the bird by restraining it, one to hold the head, and one to inject the drug.

Personnel can also use gas or neck dislocation.

Employees of the organization can only use firearms on the ostriches in extreme circumstances, if they have a trained shooter on the premises.
