As Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected loud noises ringing out around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up behind her. The person was a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle running.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and medical teams treating many victims.

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent beach safety officers, said that the crew acted heroically from the instant the shooting started right into late that nighttime.
