Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked With Western Troops, Investigation Hears

A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology enabling the militant group to locate Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

The source, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to move homes and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining official handling of a catastrophic leak of private information involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A spreadsheet including their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally household data, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at British military command in early 2022.

The breach became known months later, when identities of multiple applicants who had applied to move to Britain appeared on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's this misconception that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” she told MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain your phone number, they can locate your exact position. That is what intelligence groups did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed advanced decryption, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Early investigations submitted to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the breach was enacted in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved if they could and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, if authorities had access to these details, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not standing up to the authorities; they live secretly. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

She detailed horrific violence suffered by concerned people, involving electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to force households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
